Google vs. Microsoft: What is the Future of the Workplace?

Ah, the age-old question: Google or Microsoft?

You may as well be asking someone to choose between Team Edward and Team Jacob, Star Wars and Star Trek, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. Some people will not care one way or another, while others are willing to go to bat for their beloved platform.

But seriously, Google vs. Microsoft – which one is best? Let’s find out.

Collaboration in the Workplace: Google

Don’t get us wrong, Microsoft 365 has state-of-the-art team chats, supports online meetings and lets you reach your team members on the go. But in our humble opinion, it doesn’t hold a candle to Google Workspace.

Google makes video calls, email, chat and managing shared documents that much more intuitive. Because let’s face it, many of us are Luddites, and that’s okay! If we were all IT whizzes, then no one would care about IT whizzes and where would that leave the IT whizzes?

Productivity: Microsoft

Google’s apps are exclusively web-based on your PC, which does make for a cleaner interface, but it’s not always convenient when you’re on the go. In other words, not great for those of us who are far behind on a big project and trapped in the airport with no Wi-Fi. (Are we speaking from experience? Nah.)

Microsoft’s productivity tools come with both desktop and web versions, allowing you to make big strides on your project as long as you have access to a power outlet.

Communication: Google

For business-minded organizations, Microsoft is just dandy, and in theory, allows you to host up to 300 participants on video calls.

However, many of us have been plagued by connectivity issues while trying to join a Teams meeting or had one of those not-so-intuitive experiences we mentioned earlier when trying to navigate an app. Opt for Google’s cloud-based video conferencing and straightforward UI instead.

Security: Microsoft

Make no mistake, both Google and Microsoft care deeply about security and data privacy, which makes this debate a bit like picking between two children. But with Microsoft’s adherence to international compliance and keeping business data leaks to a minimum, we have to go with 365.

Again, we want to reiterate: Both platforms care deeply about securely storing your data, but in the monumental Google vs. Microsoft debate, only one can reign supreme. And parents do have a favorite child.

Google vs. Microsoft: The Final Verdict

From collaboration in the workplace to productivity, communication and security, one platform surpasses the other, and that is . . . whichever one is best for your business.

Is that a cop-out answer? Quite possibly. Does the right platform for your business genuinely depend upon your company’s needs? Without a doubt.
